I really liked the interview that Nick Bowden has conducted with Mark43 co-founders. My favorite part is how Scott, Matt and Flo started to build an advanced analytics platform to help cops solve crimes – but when they showed an early MVP to a potential client, they realized analytics software is not their biggest need. The founders quickly understood that without a good system of record, doing advanced analytics is pretty much impossible, and all existing law enforcement systems of record were terrible. They decided to pivot to build the system of record instead, and the rest is history.

I think a lot of entrepreneurs could learn from this:

  • Ship a minimum viable product as early as possible
  • Get feedback from actual users
  • Don’t be afraid to pivot if you find a better business idea.
